Pre-Baby Fashionista to Post-Baby Fashion Failure

What has happened to my wardrobe?  In my twenties I liked to think that I was keeping up with the trendy styles of the season, with the ability to dress with panache when the circumstances presented themselves.  Matching accessories to go with each outfit and cute shoes were a must!  As this chick approaches 40 with two kids in tow, I open my closet door and become woozy.  I still have some of those outfits from my twenties….Not so trendy anymore I might add.  What happened to my fashion sense?  It’s as if I never had any????  Stained t-shirts, flip-flops and comfy pants you don’t want your neighbors to see, predominant my shelves.  Then there’s the little black dress that’s a must in every girl’s closest that is too little to fit.  Scanning down to my shoe rack, you’ll find one pair of strappy heels that I can only stand to wear for 2 hours because my bunions start hurting.  Ugh!  What did I do to deserve this?

Next, please enter my children’s closets.  In them you will find cute shoes from Nordstrom or Striderite that cost twice as much as the shoes I just purchased off of the internet.  You’ll also notice adorable dresses with matching hair accessories and coats for every occasion.  What is wrong with this picture?  To top it off, I vividly recall looking at my mom wearing MY hand-me-down sweaters and shirts from high school and giving her a hard time about it!  I am becoming HER….a discovery that I am uncovering as I age.  Don’t get me wrong, my mom is wonderful, but I swore I’d never let myself become that out of touch with modern sophistication.  I am now eating my words.

The reality is that I don’t enjoy shopping when I’m in a rush or when my kids are nagging at me about how boring “mommy shopping” is.  Internet shopping has helped a little, but I still find that not being able to try things on leads to a lot of returns.  When it comes to a solution to my shabby attire, I suppose I’m in a quandary.  I need to do a better job scheduling time to shop by myself.  I am surprised at how low on my priority list that style has fallen….I am hoping to start climbing back up the flair ladder before my kids hit high school age and start ducking beneath the car windows so that their friends don’t see them with me…..Girls, I would love to hear about any strategies you may have!!  This blog is an SOS for HELP!  The fashion police are hot on my trail!

Why is it that in my 20′s I could wear high heeled pumps all day without issue. I had them in every color to match every outfit…..ahhh the 80′s. NOW the thought of putting on high heels makes me cranky. Thank goodness those cute wedges are back in now…..my feet smile at the thought of those…..really comfy!!!

  4. I’m the mom of a 9-month-old and I’m already having the same problem. This are my immediate steps out of Drabland:

    1. I threw out my rat-coloured hoodie that I wore every day.
    2. I begged my housemates not to let me out of the house in flipflops, especially if I’m going to work.
    3. I am making the MONSTROUS effort of putting on some eyeliner, mascara and blush before leaving the house.

I hope once I feel a bit better I’ll be able to go and buy something mice for *myself* instead of more supercute outfits for my boy!

  5. Fun post!! And I hear you – I feel like I lost my fashion “mojo” after having a baby too. That’s because we’re too in love with our offspring to realize what we’re doing.

    Anyway, love your writing style!

    From a Guys Perspective:
Comfort is in.. Frumpy is out.
I think Women just change their spending habits over time. Think about it: what was your total cash outlay in your twenties- Only a few bills, likely a used (beater) car payment, perhaps rent- the rest was all for making you look marketable. Now think- House, Car payment 3x more, kids and of course- no reason to be “marketable”.
I say take money from the kids budget- Hell my mom wouldn’t buy me Jams or a Coca-Cola shirt when they were cool- I got the knock off crap.

    Thinge to Remember:
    1) Everyone around you is dressed the same way (guys too).
    2) Find deals, but find something that sells you- Everyone needs a few outfits that makes them confident
    3) Get something sexy- all the way down to the undergarments :)
    4) Watch out- #2 and #3 may make us guys more “touchy feely”
