The Rent is Too Damn High!!

I have to say, I’ve been avoiding all the political hoopla this election season because the political arena has gotten too outrageous and seems to only breed hatred, rage, and more division between people.  We are from the same species, yet we can turn into viscous animals when we feel passionate about something.  It is good to have passion, but when the stakes are high and the outcome only brings more harm than good, I find myself putting up blinders to protect myself from the negativity, especially when it comes to politics.  I may not be fully partaking in my civic duties, but at times I don’t think it would matter if I did anyway.

With that said, I have to say I really got a kick out of Jimmy McMillan’s stance that “The rent is just too damn high”, and nothing else matters.  He was clear and consistent, and brought a bit of light and breezy to the conversation between NY Governor wanna be’s!  His approach to the political game is to draw media attention to a specific issue versus himself.  Although unlikely to win Governor-Elect, his agenda will be known for years to come.  This catchy phrase has already caught on like the Wendy’s commercial “Where’s the Beef”?  So maybe, this Jimmy guy has a point and maybe he’s smarter than we think because he has not only made his point known, but both conservatives and liberals can joke about the Rent being too Damn High together, instead of being so Damn Nasty to each other.  After November, people will still remember Jimmy McMillan taking poetic license for all the problems in New York (or the whole country for that matter), and that is just too Damn enlightening!

Zippy Questions:

  • Have you heard of Jimmy McMillan’s The Rent is Too Damn High Party?  Have you seen the video of his performance during the Governor of NY debate?   If not click here and check it out!
  • After viewing the video, what are your thoughts?
  • Interstingly, Jimmy doesn’t even pay rent, but this doesn’t stop him from speaking up for others.  Do you think that the fact that he doesn’t pay rent negates his platform?

Are you “Waiting for Superman”?

“Waiting for Superman” appears to be causing a stir in the educational community.  For those of you who are unaware, the new movie, “Waiting for Superman”, is a documentary to be released nationally on October 1st.  It highlights the current state of American education and suggests charter schools as an alternative for those encountering issues in the public setting.

Chancellor Michelle Rhee who currently heads up the Washington DC school system has been haled in this film as a groundbreaker in the educational arena.  Rhee has been in the headlines recently for her militant view on dealing with poor performing teachers and for her attempts to lure good teachers to her school system by offering double the current salary, but with an agreement that these teachers can not join the union. Needless to say the unions are very disgruntled with this proposal and the idea was quickly dismissed.

I just need to say that I had my AhhHA moment after watching Michelle Rhee being interviewed on The Oprah Show.  Rhee noted that as a parent she knew that if she were sitting in a classroom and the teacher was introduced on the first day of school as a nice person who is not such a great teacher, but that they were going to give this person one more chance to improve, while practicing on your child’s class, that she would not find this acceptable.  This is why she is adamant about trying to improve the teacher quality in the district; she feels that it is her duty to make sure that parents and students are not put into this position.  Her methods are not popular with the staff, but as a parent I can appreciate her decisiveness.

I have to agree that if my child were put in a class with a teacher that had been in remediation for years and was not improving that I would be a little on the edgy side.  I would probably not be waiting for superman at this point….I might become superman!

In an interview this week President Obama was asked if he felt that the DC public schools were as good at preparing our nation’s children for college and the work place as the private schools that Malia and Sasha, his daughters, are currently attending.  Gotta say that I like Obama’s honesty.  He noted that at this time although there are gains being made that he cannot say that the public schools in DC are on par with the private schools in that same area.  Hmmmm….

ZippyChix questions to ponder:

1.)    Do you think that doubling the teacher’s salaries and ditching the union is a good idea?

2.)     Have you ever had a teacher that you knew was not a good match for your child?  Did you do anything about it?

3.)    Do you feel that parent participation is a vital component of education or should the schools be held accountable?

4.)     Do you plan on seeing the movie “Waiting for Superman”?

Kate I. Gosselin… Seriously?

Okay, I admit that I was a huge fan of Jon and Kate Plus EightKate I. Gosselin’s punchy comments about her beau and her brood were hilarious.  Honestly, I wondered how Kate I. Gosselin held up so well with her eight darlings.  I recall one episode when the sextuplets were potty training and there were a couple of puddles on the floor while the offspring were running amok.  Being a mother of only two, I could relate to Kate I. Gosselin’s level of frazelment (is that a word?).  Yet Kate I. Gosselin handled the current state of affairs methodically, with an air of self-restraint that I would never possess.  Had the universe put me in Kate I. Gosselin’s shoes, I would have been running around the house like a rabid animal….What happened to my once revered hero, Kate I. Gosselin?

Here’s my flip-off….

I supported Kate I. Gosselin during her very public break-up with that good-for-nothing, slimy, bum…Jon.  I applauded Kate I. Gosselin’s appearance on The View.  I defended Kate I. Gosselin’s shabby hair extensions.  Dancing With The Stars… I am now beginning to draw a line in the sand.  We all need boundaries!  Kate I. Gosselin has two left feet and no rhythm…Kate I. Gosselin; you’re really starting to embarrass yourself!   To make matters worse, Kate I. Gosselin proceeds to sign another contract with TLC to move forward with her sister series Kate Plus Eight.  Leave the kids alone why don’t you!  It’s now very apparent that all Kate I. Gosselin cares about is the spotlight…desperation is so ugly!  To top it all off, the recent cover of People Magazine has pushed me over the edge.  When did Kate I. Gosselin become a fitness guru?  Posing in a bikini makes the cover, ugh!  Kate I. Gosselin, I’m done with you!!!  You are dead to me now!   Get over yourself….Seriously?

To our Readers….You may have noticed the over-usage of Kate I. Gosselin in this post.  Indeed, there was a reason for our madness….You are helping us with a prankster experiment.  Thanks to Mommy Wants Vodka, who is very entertaining, we thought we may mirror one of her ventures.  She recently used another celebrity’s name with his middle initial, which took her website to the top of Google …We’re curious if we can do the same.

By the way….Kate I. Gosselin, you are still dead to me!

Who Are These Zippy Chix Anyway?

Well, here we are…launched our site on June 3rd and have been having a blast blogging and reading blogs written by other females ever since!  There’s a great community of women in cyberspace and it’s a pleasure to be a part of it!  What I’ve learned is that I seem to gravitate towards blogs that include narratives and stories about personal experiences and bios.  It helps to know I’m not alone when it comes to parenting and dealing with the harsh and often amusing realities of the world!

The other Zippies and I have been thrilled to pick up a bit more traffic since we’ve started, and it is time for us to formally introduce ourselves.  The four of us have had the pleasure of working together for 11+ years in a school district outside of Washington DC.  We have adopted the philosophy that humor is a great remedy to chaos, and we often laugh our way through the hustle and bustle of being employed full time as well as caring for our families at home.  We love what we do, we love working together, and we are always trying new gadgets, new trends, and new diets as we navigate through the insanity of our daily lives.  We started the phrase, “Keep it Light and Breezy” years ago when stress and worry had consumed the work atmosphere…it was catchy and we’ve strived to live with this in mind!

Meet Zippy #1…physical therapist, wife, and mommy to eight year old twins (boy and girl), a dog, a cat, and any animal that she comes in contact with.  She has gone as far as saving snakes found hanging from our school’s ceilings and made sure none were exterminated much to our dismay!  She makes humane mouse traps for our office constructed of toilet paper rolls and a trash can so these nasty creatures do not meet their fate on sticky traps.  Instead they plop into a deep trash can waiting for this Zippy to release them into the wilderness…probably to come right back to our office!    Whenever there is an animal (insect, reptile, mammal…you name it) in need, she is the person to call!  This Zippy is also known for her artistic talent and creative mind.  She has taught us how to crochet; she makes her own jewelry, and has wonderful craft ideas!  Her talent is what drives www.zippychix.com.

Zippy #2 (me)…occupational therapist, wife, and mommy to 2 girls and a boy (ages 6, 5, and 3).  I was either pregnant or nursing for three straight years, but am finally feeling more like myself again.  I love my profession and enjoy working with children ages 5-21…these kids are the real heroes and I feel blessed to be part of their lives!  I am lucky to have the summers to be a stay at home mommy…although, two months is about as much as I can handle before going a bit loony.  I need my Zippies to keep me grounded, so I enjoy returning to work at the start of every school year.  We call our office the Cave…it literally feels that way…no heat or air conditioning during the seasons, but no problem for us…we have blankets and fingerless gloves to wear so we can type on the computer while keeping warm.  Although, the amenities are lacking, I wouldn’t give up our office for anything.

Zippy #3…occupational therapist, wife, and mommy to an eight year old daughter, six year old son, 2 doggies, and 1 hamster.  This zippy has a talent for landscaping, interior design, and dance.  She keeps the rest of us organized and on schedule.  She has created a command center at our office with meeting times, school schedules, student lists, and many other to-do lists taped on the wall.  We only need to look to her if we’ve forgotten our weekly agenda, and she will keep us in the know!

Zippy #4…physical therapist, wife, and mommy to a 1st year college bound daughter, a son who is a rising high schooler, and two Siamese cats.  This Zippy always has a solution and is quick to respond when an unexpected situation presents itself….which helps when you’re a mom to 2 teenagers requiring you to stay sharp and witty!  The rest of us Zippies are taking notes for when our turn comes!  She has great ideas and always has something up her sleeve!

Zippy Chix Recap:

  • Zippy #4 is our idea girl….Zippy #3 keeps us organized….Zippy #2 goes with the Cave flow…and Zippy #1 is our creative designer and enforcer….We all have a part to play in our mission to stay Light and Breezy while managing work and home!
  • We are having a delectable time reading many great blogs in cyberspace and getting familiar with this new form of communication!
  • We are fairly new into the process, but are also enjoying the gift of gab…we love expressing our thoughts and ideas with our readers, and enjoy the discussions and comments we receive!  Thanks for checking us out!

Zippolitics 101…stop the madness!

Let me start by saying Zippy Chix is a multi-partisan blog site with multiple views and open dialogues between women.  These four Zippies are unique contributors that come from differing backgrounds and political philosophies.  Amazingly, our friendship endures diversity of opinions without anger or resentment.  Imagine what this world would be like if we could accept each others beliefs and opinions without knee-jerk reactions to oppose another’s outlook?  Yes, there are extremists and terrorists who should not be put up with, but for the more representative demographic, why can’t we be more tolerant of each other?

As for me, I am a Democrat living in a fairly conservative area.  Most of the people living where I do, who don’t know me, make the assumption that I’m of the same political philosophy.  I nod my head, take note, and rant to my husband later that evening.  However, I listen to the opposing view point and have a better appreciation of why they feel the way they do…at times I can even agree with what they have to say.

This is what I call Zippolitics….when people can be open to each others views without anger and judgment.  These Zippies like to keep things light and breezy, and this also includes politics.  The fact is we all want what we believe is best for ourselves and others.  Most of us are not arch-enemies and when you peel back the layers of one’s argument, it is much easier to appreciate each other’s differences without resentment and upset.

What makes me heated is not someone’s difference of opinion, but the constant attacks and nasty commentary that occurs between groups of people.  I know it’s easy to hop on the band wagon with the media spinning things out of control simply to stir trouble, but it is our personal responsibility to maintain dignity and respect.  Who has the time to be angry and resentful all the time?

Zippy Chix Recap:

  • We all have differences which we should feel comfortable discussing without knee-jerk reactions from those that do not agree with us.
  • The Zippy’s Light and Breezy philosophy also applies to politics, know to us as Zippolitics.
  • Let’s be open to all sides of an argument, and know that it’s okay not to always be in agreement with one another.

Steve Slater’s Dramatic Jet Blue Exit?

How many of you secretly smiled at the antics of Steven Slater’s dramatic exit from the Jet Blue airliner last week?  Apparently as the plane landed, Steve was bonked in the head by a bag from the overhead compartment, had an argument with two customers regarding overhead baggage real estate and it literally threw him over the edge.  He spewed profanities at the group on the plane noting to the real estate hogs (his term was f$$$$in A$$H) who told him to go away (F$$$ Off) that he had just “had it”.   Apparently Steve then dramatically took off his tie and threw it (sort of like a Chippendale? Maybe?) , grabbed 2 brewskies , hit the chute button and only after throwing his  carry-on baggage down the chute did he actually take the plunge himself.  Such a theatrical exit!

Now my fellow ZippyChix, I know what you are thinking.  It is quite obvious that this dude has never had to deal with children or worse yet teens.  If I could stage one dramatic exit for each time one of my offspring ticked me off, I would be a movie star!  I have had people call me names, tell me “leave me alone” (translation to Steve F$$$ Off), ask for things incessantly, argue over car and room real estate,  hit the call button relentlessly, deposit their trash everywhere, misplace items that they should not and the list goes on and on.  I am not an airline attendant and unlike Steve, I am unable to go home afterwards…..I am already home (smile).

Now the unbelievable part, I wake up and what is in the news?  Steve may have been offered a TV reality show for his juvenile antics.  In this show he will assist various disgruntled workers with the staging of their own dramatic exit.  Imagine how many mommies he could assist on any one given day (bahahahaaa).  It is quite obvious here that Steve has never had to deal with any type of child/teen antics on a regular basis, for if he had the comments from his peanut gallery would not have fazed him and he would have just continued his day. But nope, he is now being offered a job as a reality TV star and will probably make lots of $$$ from this crazy stunt.

Oh yeah, when the police arrived at his house the next morning, he was otherwise occuppied, but was ultimately arrested as it is apparently a crime to needlessly deploy an airline chute.  Well, at least Steve will no longer have to deal with the child like behavior of any passengers…

ZippyChix Recap:

  • How many of you were cheering Steve Slater on?
  • Do you really think that Steve deserves a reality TV show?

My Friend Vera

So I’ve known of Vera Bradley for years, but never entered her vast arena of bags and accessories until recently.  I was actually doing some gift shopping and ran across a great sale on the Vera Bradley website.  I was able to purchase some totally cute purses for my nieces at really great prices (i.e. I paid $12 for a $45 purse plus free shipping).   I managed to spend some time perusing the website and found a few good deals for myself as well. :)   Prior to that pivotal shopping day, I had always thought that Vera Bradley prices were a tad high just for a quilted purse or bag, but now I see that the high quality and functional design of her products are well worth the price for the most part.  Throw in a coupon or a good sale and they are definitely worth the money!

There are quite a few Vera items that I really like.  I think my favorite is the zip around wallet, although I do absolutely love the large Vera tote bag too!  My favorite pattern in the discontinued pink elephants and although it is discontinued, there are products still available in that pattern at Vera as well as on Ebay.   Most of the patterns are really nice and the quality of the quilted cotton fabric is high.  The purses and totes generally have multiple pockets, secure zippers, and comfortable straps.

Upon receiving that very first order of Vera bags, I was HOOKED.  I proceeded to place 2 other rather large orders for items that were both to be gifts for others as well as a few more things for myself. :)   Thankfully, my fellow Zippy Chix staged an intervention because I was getting a lil’ bit carried away with ordering from Vera.  I have become very good friends with Vera.  I still check the website frequently and I’ve been known to watch a thing or two on Ebay.  Of course I am signed up for Vera Bradley email updates too, so I get reminders almost daily about some special or other, but I haven’t purchased anything in a few……..weeks.

Zippy Chix Recap:

Vera Bradley:

  • Nice products made of high quality materials with excellent craftsmanship
  • Functional and timeless designs
  • Frequent sales online and in stores
  • Fun patterns and colors

Book Club Mania

This chick loves to read…do I have time?  Not really, but when I can I read!  I tend to gravitate towards historical fiction, books about relationships, memoirs, and humor!  I shy away from too much sadness and Goth (although I have to admit I am intrigued by the Twilight series)…Anyway, it is not always a straightforward process finding books to read.  I don’t typically have the time or fortitude to hunt for a good paperback (or hardback when I’m raring to go).  I rely more on others to do that for me!  I tend to buy my books on Amazon, and have even joined Amazon Prime, which offers 2 day shipping for most items.  There is an annual fee, but I would normally exceed the set amount anyway, so it makes sense for me to pay ahead!  By way of Prime membership, I purchase non-book items as well and have these things shipped in just 2 days!  This comes in handy at Christmas time when buying gifts!

With that said, I have slowly added to my reading repertoire and would love to share some of my favorites…

1.  The Help by Kathryn Stockett…this is my all-time favorite and was a hit at my book club.  It takes place in the Deep South during the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s.  I would classify the book as historic fiction, drama, and humor all wrapped into one.  The author uses her true life experiences as a white child growing up in Jackson, Mississippi.  She was cared for by a black maid named Demetrie.  Demetire died when Kathryn was 16, and Kathryn always regretted not thanking her before she died.  Although, the characters are fiction, I believe this book was intended to honor Demetrie and all the other caregivers during that time!

2.  House of Daughters (House of Peine) by Sarah-Kate Lynch…funny, zany, a complete delight!  Sarah-Kate Lynch is a Kiwi (also known as a New Zealander)…her sense of humor makes this a fast read and heartfelt.  This book, like her other writings, interweaves food and drink as a metaphor to living life.  Three sisters, from different backgrounds, congregate at their father’s Champagne vineyard upon his death.  Secrets are unveiled and champagne bubbles come to life during this tale about sisterhood, jealousy, rage, and love!  A must read!

3.  The Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah…although sad and distressing, this book taught me about things I never knew.  This tale takes place in Washington state and through fairytales, persistence, and forgiveness this narrative is a story within a story.  Daughters learn to forgive themselves and their harsh mother while those who witnessed WWII Leningrad are not forgotten.

4.  The Constant Princess by Philippa Gregory…historic fiction about the first wife of Henry VIII’s six wives…how does the saying go?  Divorced, Beheaded, Died, Divorced, Beheaded, Lived….if nothing else you will be thankful that you were not married to him!

Ms. Gregory is a popular English historical fiction writer.  She is contested by many historians, but one can not debate her keen sense of drawing interesting conclusions about questions unanswered.  I loved her thoughts regarding why Henry’s first wife, Queen Katherine, refused to accept that their marriage was annulled.  If she had, history would have been quite different!

5.  A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick…fiction, perverse, strange are the words that come to mind.  Yet, as twisted as it may be I became addicted to the plot which involved a wife slowly poisoning her husband while helping him search for his lost son.  The plot is suspenseful and alarming, but takes a surprising turn…I don’t want to give it away so read for yourself!

Zippy Chix Recap:

  • Reading a good book is a pleasurable activity for this chick.
  • Finding a good read can be overwhelming, so I have picked a few of my faves to share with you
  • If you have any suggestions for a good read, please comment!

Did Disney Have an Affliction with Mothers?

I was sitting with a mom during a birthday party and the topic of Disney movies stimulated an interesting conversation concerning Disney’s disregard of mothers.  Has anyone ever realized that almost all Disney movies either lack a mother figure or portray an evil one?  Think about it…

  1. Finding Nemo – Mom dies
  2. Ratatouille – no mom
  3. Beauty and the Beast – Mom’s never even mentioned
  4. Cinderella – evil stepmother
  5. Snow White – evil stepmother
  6. The Little Mermaid – no mom
  7. Bambi – Mom dies
  8. Jasmine- no mother
  9. Mary Poppins-mom is too preoccupied to care for her kids
  10. Pinocchio-no mother

I may have missed a few, but you get the point!

I decided to dig a bit deeper and found some interesting facts about Walt Disney…

  • It was reported he had a loving and nurturing mother in childhood.
  • His mother died from lethal fumes exhumed from a broken furnace…Walt Disney and his brother purchased this new house for their parents in 1938.  Bambi was produced in 1942.
  • Some theorists believe Walt Disney used many Grimm’s fairy tales or stories that did not include a mother as a way to channel his guilt and devastation concerning his mother’s death.
  • Walt Disney used coming-of-age themes in which main characters had to grow up through harsh experiences.  This was the ingredient that made his movies so triumphant.
  • Without a mother to nurture and guide the main character, the tale is more distressing.

The bottom line when following up on the various theories and debates about the lack of moms in Disney movies is:

The only way to create drama and torment is to exclude the mother.  Without a mom, life is chaotic and ruthless.  We all need to be mothered.  Moms may not always be appreciated or validated, but when they disappear from the scene the plot takes a turn for the worse!

So this I say to all you moms…

When you feel worthless and the small stuff you do day in and day out goes unnoticed, think of the Disney movies and know you are irreplaceable and exceptional!

Zippy Chix Recap:

  • Walt Disney used tales that excluded mothers or killed them off!
  • Disney did not appear to have distaste for mothers.  In fact, he valued them enough to create a disenchanted world without them.  This made for a better plot.
  • When we feel unimportant or invalidated, remember without us the world would be a cruel and scary place!
  • Walt Disney never got over the Oedipus Complex.
  • Walt Disney gets it!

Oprah and Gayle’s Symbiotic Relationship

Has anyone wondered how Oprah and Gayle have maintained a strong friendship through the years?  Gayle has watched her BFF grow from a local news reporter to an American icon.  Many friendships would not survive such a transformation, but these two women are an amazing duo, and it is captivating to watch their very public friendship!

A couple of fun facts to know about these Ya Ya sisters

  • Oprah’s middle name is Gail
  • They have the same shoe size (10)
  • They both met in Baltimore working at WJZ-TV
  • A snow storm prevented Gayle from driving home from work, and Oprah offered to let her stay at her apartment, which was walking distance from the studio…from this point forward the pair developed a life long friendship that has stood the test of time!

What I find fascinating is the interplay between Oprah and Gayle.  Gayle could have dismissed the friendship once Oprah’s fame took off due to envy or jealousy; and Oprah could have dropped Gayle because of her new circle of celebrity friends…. BUT instead Gayle cheered for Oprah from the sidelines, and Oprah made a point of including Gayle in her success.  Although, some women can be competitive and catty at times, this, to me, is a true lesson on how women’s connections can be genuine and symbiotic!  Gayle and Oprah have both been enriched by each other.  One may wonder what would have become of them had they not had each other?

Cultivating friendships, like Oprah and Gayle’s, will bring positive changes into your life, so nurture your Ya Ya’s!

A quick Zippy Chix recap:

  • Oprah and Gayle know what sisterhood is all about!
  • The sisterhood has no place for cattiness and jealousy!
  • One never knows how and where they will meet their Ya Ya, so be open to new situations!
  • True friendship will bring positive changes to your life…we guarantee it!
