It’s getting to be that time of the year again….the first day of school is fast approaching and this chick is gearing up! Although spending the summer with my kids is a memorable experience, I am also anticipating a new school year for myself (I work in the school setting) and my kiddos. Every year brings a chance to renew the spirit, which often includes a fashion recheck…see our blog, “Pre-Baby Fashionista to Post-Baby Fashion Failure“! Luckily, my girls keep me current and I often look to them for help. Sadly they are only 5 and 6, but this chick is glad to have these fashion consultants none the less!
My little divas have been asking me for Twinkle-Toes for over a year, and I finally decided to search the web. I was not shocked, but disappointed by the cost. I searched discount sites (not much out there), and came back to the Skechers site, which had more variety and sizes to choose from. I love how well organized and easy it is to buy from this site. I was able to find out “What’s Hot” with just one click! Although, a bit pricey, I can not deny that my babies and toddlers all got Stride Rite shoes, and now we have graduated to the next tier of shoe buying.
Well, I’ve just ordered my two princesses a pair of Twinkle Toe Glitterazzi shoes (always the same for sanity’s sake in this chick’s house) for just $39.00 a pair. I kind of like the Funkadelic style too, but had to restrain myself…I will admit I did get myself a pair of Abbot Kinney…who said Twinkle Toes are just for kids!
If you decide to buy Skechers from their website, be sure to join the VIP Club for free shipping and no sales tax (except for CA..sorry).
Zippy Chix Recap:
- Pay notice to your kids in regards to fashion, they are perhaps more apt at keeping you trendy and in-the- know!
- Skechers has been a good starting point for this chick!
- Be adventurous and allow yourself to live a bit on the wild side…for me that was getting myself a pair of the adult version of Twinkle Toes (Abbot Kinney).

This Zippy Chick loves to mix things up, i.e. good drinks, a batch of cookie dough, breakfast for dinner, a good debate, and of recent, the use of two different color nail polishes (one color for each foot or hand). This mani/pedi practice has stimulated numerous questions and conversations about the norm. Earlier in life I believed that one needed to have matching polish on both the toes and the fingers. Later I decided that it was alright to wear one color on the toes and another color on the fingers. As of late, I’ve thrown caution to the wind and am just mixing up the colors by feet- such a rebellious move against mainstream nail polish usage. My 7 year-old daughter also loves to have a 2 color pattern panted on her nails as well. She prefers the every other finger color pattern as opposed to my preferred use of one color on one hand/foot and one color on the other.
This idea of using completely different colors on different feet was born after much observation of the younger sect (<18) who always seems to be wearing socks that do not match. I have found it rather impressive that one can confidently pull off wearing 2 different socks that actually work together. There is now even a cool clothing/accessory company called LittleMissMatched that specializes in creating mismatched socks, boots and flip flops for women and little girls. I must admit that I still go with matching socks, but who knows when I may decide to experiment with that phenomenon…
When deciding on the 2 polish colors I am going to use, I generally aim for colors that are similar in intensity and value. A light pink on one foot with a light purple on the other is one of my favs. I also sometimes go for the turquoise and hot pink combo depending on if I’m feeling spunky. It’s just a fun way to do something a little different. Call me crazy but I like to mix things up every once in awhile…
Zippy Chix Recap:
- Express yourself through color
- Have fun with it
- Observe trends and decide what works for you
- Feel good about your fashion decisions

What the heck happened to wearing pantyhose with a dress? Apparently this is something that is only done on the most formal of occasion, if then. Now the idea of freedom is certainly appealing, however I always feel just a little self conscious and that I should be apologizing and passing out sunglasses for the bright glare that my legs are emitting. This chick spent her teen years attempting to achieve that savage tan that was advertised on the Coppertone commercials (remember the one where the girl swung on the rope across a lagoon with beautifully bronzed skin); unfortunately they forgot to put the disclaimer on the bottle that if you have freckled Irish style skin that this just will not happen!
So my dilemma in the summer is always how to get my legs looking tropical without having to shell out the cash for the spray tans that are expensive and not really conveniently located to the old homestead. Well enter my brilliant aunt (she is my age) who noted that a friend’s teenage daughter’s use a product called Sally Hansen Leg Makeup when wearing dresses and that it looks as if they are wearing pantyhose. Well this caught my attention and I promptly went out and purchased the product.
This product has taken away the stress of wearing a dress without pantyhose for me. Truth be told, I love the look of the product so much that I have now started wearing it with shorts and bathing suits.
Sally Hansen Spray on Leg Makeup:
- Spray into your hands and rub evenly onto desired area- This one is important; don’t spray directly onto the leg it will alter results
- Takes about a minute to apply
- No mess and it dries within 60 seconds so you can dress right away
- Economical—one bottle is under $15 and lasts for a long time
- Gives your legs that air brushed appearance
- Water resistant, so you can swim, but washes of easily with soap
- Comes in 4 shades
Well ladies as I no longer even attempt to bronze my skin (I wear SPF 50 and sit under the umbrella) this product has really helped me with my to pantyhose or not to pantyhose question. In the summer, I am definitely all about the Sally Hansen Leg Make Up. Not sure what I will do when the cooler weather arrives.
How many of you have this dilemma? Or do you just say no to the hose and enjoy the freedom? Let me know what your thoughts are on this subject; I can’t wait to hear!
Zippy Chix Recap:
Sally Hansen Leg Makeup:
- Should those of us not blessed with bronzed legs have to suffer and wear pantyhose?
- Sally Hansen has taken some of the stress out of the “to pantyhose or not to pantyhose” question…
- Economical product that has made the summer happier

What has happened to my wardrobe? In my twenties I liked to think that I was keeping up with the trendy styles of the season, with the ability to dress with panache when the circumstances presented themselves. Matching accessories to go with each outfit and cute shoes were a must! As this chick approaches 40 with two kids in tow, I open my closet door and become woozy. I still have some of those outfits from my twenties….Not so trendy anymore I might add. What happened to my fashion sense? It’s as if I never had any???? Stained t-shirts, flip-flops and comfy pants you don’t want your neighbors to see, predominant my shelves. Then there’s the little black dress that’s a must in every girl’s closest that is too little to fit. Scanning down to my shoe rack, you’ll find one pair of strappy heels that I can only stand to wear for 2 hours because my bunions start hurting. Ugh! What did I do to deserve this?
Next, please enter my children’s closets. In them you will find cute shoes from Nordstrom or Striderite that cost twice as much as the shoes I just purchased off of the internet. You’ll also notice adorable dresses with matching hair accessories and coats for every occasion. What is wrong with this picture? To top it off, I vividly recall looking at my mom wearing MY hand-me-down sweaters and shirts from high school and giving her a hard time about it! I am becoming HER….a discovery that I am uncovering as I age. Don’t get me wrong, my mom is wonderful, but I swore I’d never let myself become that out of touch with modern sophistication. I am now eating my words.
The reality is that I don’t enjoy shopping when I’m in a rush or when my kids are nagging at me about how boring “mommy shopping” is. Internet shopping has helped a little, but I still find that not being able to try things on leads to a lot of returns. When it comes to a solution to my shabby attire, I suppose I’m in a quandary. I need to do a better job scheduling time to shop by myself. I am surprised at how low on my priority list that style has fallen….I am hoping to start climbing back up the flair ladder before my kids hit high school age and start ducking beneath the car windows so that their friends don’t see them with me…..Girls, I would love to hear about any strategies you may have!! This blog is an SOS for HELP! The fashion police are hot on my trail!
Zippy Chix Recap:
Fashion Failure SOS:
- Post-Baby fashions have become drab
- My kid’s clothes are more expensive
- I want to start hiding from myself in the mirror
- Please lend this chick a hand and give me some strategies!

Ribbon isn’t just for presents and flower arrangements! This colorful accent can dress up anything from a serving tray and candleholder to a serving bucket. This chick is partial to ribbon with wired edges as this can turn the run of the mill bow into something eye-catching. Even if you don’t have Martha Stewart’s knack for crafts, wired ribbon is easy to work with. If you are lacking the creative gene as I am, wired ribbon is the poor man’s attempt at giving a lackluster environment a facelift. Rotate ribbon each season or for different holidays. Get inventive about how you trim common household items such as light fixtures, flower pots, candles, cake plates and the list goes on and on and on and…(you get the idea!). Ribbon is an easy way to turn a serving table into a conversation piece for your guests. I’ve had friends suggest that I open a catering business because they are impressed with how I’ve presented the fare. I chuckle to myself, because homemaking was never really my thing! Whether you have a flair for interior design or prefer the white wall look, ribbon can give your home a makeover in no time flat. Depending on where you live there are likely stores nearby where you can find an array of ribbon to suite your style. This chick loves Michaels and the fabric section at my local Wal-Mart. Go on and dress up the drab. Its fun to fool your friends!
Zippy Chix Recap:
Wired Ribbon:
- Cheap way to dress up your room
- Easy to work with
- Need not have passed home economics 101 to gussy up your home for guests
